Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has charged the police in the state to issue guidelines on the usage of local guns to enhance safety and protection of citizens, especially at public functions.
The governor’s media aide, Malam Olawale Rasheed made this known while commenting on the Killing of a United States based Nigerian lecturer in Ejigbo, Osun State.
CRUX NEWS reports that, Dr Richard Idowu popularly known as Adeoriokin was killed on Saturday after the 50th coronation anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin.
According to the Osun State spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola who also confirmed the incident, he stated that the suspect who ordered the killing has been arrested.
He said, “The incident occurred on 27/1/2024 at about 9:48 pm after the 50th Coronation Anniversary of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo, Oba Oyeyode Oyesosin, where one Prince Eniola Oyeyode of Ejigbo instructed one of his civilian guards, Hammed Abdul Jelili of Ejigbo, to fire his double-barreled gun into the air to confirm if the gun was in good condition or not, but instead shot directly at the victim, and he was rushed to a hospital but confirmed dead by the doctor.
“Meanwhile, Prince Eniola Oyeyode, who gave the order to his civilian guard to fire the gun, has been arrested and detained.”
Reacting to the incident, Rasheed stated that the governor has mandated the police to initiate an investigation to ascertain the cause of the killing and counter killing in the town.
He added that the governor has charged the enforcement agencies, particularly police to issue guidelines for local gun usage in order to abate future occurrences.
