Edo State Police have apprehended five individuals – Blessing Lucky (15), Jennifer Eboigbe (30), Iziegbe Ogbodu (39), Naomi Ekhonetomwan (17), and Lucky Endurance (16) – for subjecting a woman named Christabel Akhigbe to a horrific ordeal. The accused face charges of indecent assault and cyberstalking.
The incident stemmed from an accusation of phone theft. The suspects believed Christabel stole a phone belonging to one of their own (reportedly Lucky). They allegedly contacted Christabel and demanded the phone’s return. However, even after Christabel returned the phone, the situation escalated into shocking violence.
The group reportedly lured Christabel to a residence, then proceeded to physically assault her. In a particularly cruel act, they stripped her naked and threatened further harm. This horrific abuse wasn’t the end – they filmed the encounter and uploaded the video to social media, inflicting further humiliation on their victim.
Thankfully, the Edo State Police swiftly responded to reports of the incident. All five suspects were apprehended and have reportedly confessed to their actions. The Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adeboye, emphasized that the group’s actions were not only illegal but also counterproductive. They transformed themselves from alleged victims into perpetrators facing potential prosecution.
Commissioner Adeboye further stressed the importance of reporting crimes to the authorities. He condemned the act of vigilantism and assured cooperation with human rights organizations to ensure the suspects are held accountable.
One of the accused, Jennifer Eboigbe, expressed remorse for her actions, highlighting the tragic consequences of mob mentality. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands and the importance of seeking justice through established legal channels.
