Focus on Governance, Economic Policies, and Integration
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened its 93rd ordinary session on Thursday at its headquarters in Abuja, with Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, leading the proceedings. The agenda was set to tackle pivotal issues related to governance, economic policies, and the enhancement of regional integration.
Acknowledgment and Concerns Raised
ECOWAS President Omar Touray opened the session by expressing gratitude towards President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian populace for their support of ECOWAS initiatives. He highlighted the urgency of the meeting, pointing to the ongoing challenges that the region faces, which necessitate immediate and collective action.
Detailed Agenda for Discussion
President Touray outlined that 30 specific topics would be under scrutiny during the session, including critical areas like trade, security, agriculture, and overall regional stability. His remarks also brought attention to a worrying trend in remittance flows, noting that over the past six years, there has been a decline, with only 40 percent of expected remittances being received from member states.

Celebration of Democratic Processes
He further praised the successful and peaceful electoral processes held in Liberia, Senegal, Togo, and Ghana this year, underscoring these events as beacons of democratic practice within the region. Touray urged all member states to recommit to the fundamental values of ECOWAS to foster further peace and development.
