The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended former Senator Dino Melaye, who represented Kogi West, over allegations of anti-party activities. The suspension was initiated by the party’s executive committee in Ayetoro Gbede, Ward 1, after Melaye refused to respond to a formal summon issued by the party’s disciplinary committee.
The resolution to suspend Melaye was announced on Thursday, with the decision being signed by Ward Chairman Abayomi Osamika and Ward Secretary Yodson Dayo. According to the statement, Melaye’s conduct was deemed damaging to the reputation of the PDP, prompting immediate disciplinary action.
“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable,” the resolution read. The party leaders cited Melaye’s failure to honor the disciplinary committee’s invitation on August 20, 2024, where he was expected to address accusations of misconduct and actions deemed harmful to the party.
The PDP exco highlighted that their decision to suspend Melaye was in accordance with Article 59(1) of the PDP Constitution, which grants local party executive committees the authority to take disciplinary measures against members violating party rules. The party also referenced Article 57(4) of the constitution, which outlines protocols for addressing internal disputes and misconduct within the PDP.
The Ward Exco expressed that Melaye’s disregard for the disciplinary committee and his failure to appear before them was a sign of disrespect for the party’s leadership and principles. The exco further asserted that Melaye’s actions went against the PDP’s constitutional provisions, leading to embarrassment and disrepute for the party at both local and national levels.

“His continued membership is no longer tenable,” the party added in its resolution, marking an official end to Melaye’s affiliation with the PDP, at least for the time being.
Melaye, a former chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has not yet responded publicly to the suspension or the allegations against him. His suspension has sparked significant conversation within political circles, as the PDP navigates internal issues ahead of upcoming elections. The situation remains fluid, with further developments expected as Melaye weighs his next steps.
