The Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, Bishop Kayode Williams, has shared insights regarding the protective custody of popular Nigerian cross-dresser Bobrisky during his time in detention. Bishop Williams revealed that, due to the unique circumstances surrounding Bobrisky’s gender identity, the authorities opted for a private custody arrangement to ensure his safety.
“Given the nature of our prison system, where building is accommodating a range of inmates including convicted criminals, those awaiting trial, and even condemned individuals, it was vital to take extra measures for Bobrisky’s protection. There are chronic homosexuals in our facilities who, if given the chance, could have caused harm,” Bishop Williams stated.

He further elaborated that Bobrisky’s gender identity has posed a challenge in determining where he belongs in terms of prison accommodations, citing uncertainty about whether to classify him as male or female.
“For protective measures, he was given private custody. This was a necessary step, considering the complexities surrounding his identity and the potential dangers he could face in regular prison cells,” he added.
Bishop Kayode Williams’ remarks highlight the complexities the prison system faces in managing individuals with non-binary or gender-fluid identities, particularly in an environment not accustomed to handling such cases. The measures taken for Bobrisky reflect the institution’s attempt to ensure safety amidst these challenges.
