Tope Temokun, a lawyer representing human rights activist Dele Farotimi, appeared on Channels Television’s “Inside Sources with Laolu Akande” to address recent developments in the defamation lawsuit involving Farotimi and legal icon Afe Babalola. Temokun made it clear that his client had not commissioned Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, to mediate or seek an out-of-court settlement with Babalola.
Arrest and Charges
Farotimi’s legal troubles began when he was arrested by Ekiti State police at his Lagos office earlier this month. He was charged with defamation based on content from his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,’ where he accused Babalola of corrupting the judiciary. Farotimi has pleaded not guilty and has been remanded in prison, facing additional charges in Abuja and Oyo states.
