The 10th Assembly of Cross River State has unanimously reaffirmed Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem as the Speaker of the Assembly.
This decision came after a reconciliation effort led by state governor Bassey Otu and key stakeholders, involving all 25 Assembly members in Calabar on Sunday, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Matthew Okache.
Ayambem was previously impeached on Wednesday by 17 members of the 25-member House over allegations of misappropriation of funds. A majority of the lawmakers had passed a no-confidence vote on him after about 11 months in office.
In response to his reaffirmation, Ayambem expressed gratitude to the governor and stakeholders for their efforts in restoring peace and stability to the state and the House of Assembly. He praised Governor Otu for his exemplary leadership during challenging times.
“The governor’s commitment to peace has always been evident, from his time as senator to his current role as governor. I sincerely thank him for his genuine interest in and commitment to the peace and unity of Cross River State,” Ayambem stated.
He also thanked the relevant stakeholders and his colleagues for their continuous support, pledging to foster a harmonious working environment that would contribute to the growth and progress of both the House of Assembly and Cross River State.
Ayambem emphasized the shared responsibility to collaborate for the state’s advancement, highlighting the importance of unity and cooperation among the members to enact laws serving the common good of all Cross Riverians. He pledged to lead with integrity, decency, and a focus on the welfare of all.
Ayambem, who represents Ikom 2 State Constituency, was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023.
