On Thursday, the Ado Ekiti High Court sentenced 28-year-old Ayodeji Alomoge to death by hanging for the murder of his wife’s lover.
Alomoge was brought before Justice Jubril Aladejana in April 2023 on a murder charge. In his verdict, Justice Aladejana stated, “In my view, rivalry between men over a woman’s affection should not justify provocation.”
He declared the defendant guilty of the murder charge and convicted him accordingly.
“The sentence of this court is that you, Ayodeji Alomoge, shall be hanged by the neck until death,” he pronounced.
The charge stated that on June 21, 2022, in Ikere-Ekiti, within the court’s jurisdiction, Alomoge murdered Ayomide Ogunleye for engaging in an affair with his wife.
The police reported the crime as contrary to Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
Ige, the deceased’s father, recounted to the police: “At about 12:30 a.m., my wife called me, sobbing uncontrollably. She informed me that Alomoge and his accomplices had attacked and severely beaten my son.
Upon arrival, I found my son lying in a pool of blood. Confronting Alomoge, he admitted that Ayomide was involved with his wife and confessed he had warned my son to desist or face death.
I immediately took him to a nearby hospital and then to the University Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara, where he succumbed to his injuries.”
To substantiate his case, prosecutor Kunle-Shina Adeyemo presented five witnesses and submitted the defendant’s statements, photographs of the deceased, and the medical report on the cause of death as evidence.
The defendant, represented by his lawyer Adeyinka Opaleke, pleaded for the court’s mercy but did not call any witnesses.
