Two individuals have died and 21 others have been injured following a stabbing rampage at a hospital in southwest China on Tuesday, according to local officials.
“An incident involving a knife took place at Chengnan Hospital in Zhenxiong County, resulting in two fatalities and 21 injuries,” read a statement on the county’s official WeChat account.
Authorities are investigating the suspect, a man from an adjacent village.
The injured are receiving medical treatment at the hospital, the statement continued.
State-run news outlet The Paper released images showing a man brandishing a knife at another individual armed with a stick in the hospital’s lobby, and police officers arriving at the location.
While mass violent crimes are uncommon in China due to strict firearm regulations, a series of stabbing incidents has occurred in recent years.
In Yunnan last August, a man with a history of mental illness inflicted knife wounds on people, resulting in two deaths and seven injuries.
The previous month witnessed a kindergarten stabbing in Guangdong province, southern China, leaving six dead and one injured.
Additionally, in August 2022, a knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi province, southeast China, resulted in three deaths and six injuries.
