On Tuesday, retirees of Chevron Nigeria Limited staged a protest at the company’s headquarters in Lagos over unresolved grievances. The demonstrators carried placards with messages such as:
– “We say no to dissolution of CNCPFA”
– “Chevron, treat us like other IOCs. Be considerate for once!”
– “Nigeria is a sovereign nation: respect our laws above your policies.”
Their demands included the resolution of pension delays, engagement with the National Pension Commission (PenCom), and an explanation about the alleged outsourcing of their pension fund. Protesters also accused Chevron of breaking Nigerian laws, showing disregard for retirees, and freezing pensions for decades.
The retirees called for fair treatment in line with other International Oil Companies (IOCs) operating in Nigeria and sought clarity on whether Chevron had divested from the country.
The protest underscores broader tensions surrounding corporate governance and retirees’ rights in Nigeria.
