Amidst various outcries by Nigerians, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory has becried the prevailing economic hardship and increasing insecurity challenges plaguing the country.
In a statement signed by the Secretary-General, Northern, CAN, Elder Sunday Oibe, alleged that the suffering was becoming unbearable for ordinary Nigerians, adding that the high cost of foodstuffs, transportation, goods and services, coupled with the continued decline in the value of the naira and government’s inability to arrest the situation has weakened the the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.
He also alleged that the epileptic power supply and the incessant and rampant Killing and kidnapping for ransom have led to the collapse of many small businesses which has further crippled the economy.
He said, “High cost of foodstuffs, transportation, goods and services have made life difficult for many Nigerians. The epileptic power supply has led to the collapse of many small businesses.
“The continued decline in the value of the naira and the seeming inability of the government to address the situation has completely weakened the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.”
“The situation is further compounded by escalating insecurity occasioned by rampant killings and kidnapping for ransom. Government must take urgent steps to address the depressing economic and escalating security situation in the country.”
While condemning rampaging activities of bandits in Plateau state and other parts of the country in recent times, the Christian body called for a review of the security architecture to enable effective and decisive actions against criminals and appealed to the government to adequately support the security agencies.
The body also enjoined all Nigerians to cooperate with security personnel and pray for them as they confront these enemies of the nation.
