In a bid to address the restiveness of youths and provide employment opportunities in Cross River state, Governor Bassey Otu has instructed the state’s Sports Commission to support the development of sports in public schools across the state.
The Governor made this directive during the presentation of the 2024 fiscal budget estimates to the state House of Assembly, where he promised to prioritize youth and sports development.
The 2024 budget has made adequate provisions for the revitalization of sports development, with a focus on the development of talents in football, field and track events.
The Governor emphasized that youth development programs are part of the government’s agenda and that a well-trained and educated youth is a development agent for society.

He states, “Youth development programmes aim at empowering the younger generation through participation in the socio-economic and political development of the state, are part of our agenda as a government.
“A well-trained and educated youth is a development agent for the society. Government shall place importance on the training of the mind and body of the youth through sporting activities.
“The development of talents in football, field and track events shall be given due attention in the 2024 appropriation.”
The proposed budget size for the 2024 fiscal year is N250 billion, with capital expenditure N154 billion and recurrent expenditure N95 billion.
