Nigerian football player, Deborah Abiodun, has expressed her delight and gratitude after being named among the final five nominees for the 2023 CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year award.
CRUX NEWS reports that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the names of the five finalists for the young player category on Monday, 27 November, and Abiodun was among them.
The other nominees are Esther Ajakaye, Comfort Yeboah, Nesryne El Chad, and Thubelihle Shamase from Ghana, Morocco, and South Africa, respectively.
In response to the news, Abiodun expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying, “I am absolutely thrilled and humbled to make the final shortlist for the 2023 CAF Young Player of the Year (Women) award! Grateful for this incredible recognition and amazing support. Thanks to everyone who has been part of this journey! #CAFAwards2023.”

In addition to Abiodun’s nomination, other Nigerian footballers, including Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and Randy Waldrum, as well as the Super Falcons, have been nominated in various categories.
Abiodun was part of the Super Falcons squad at the 2021 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
She received a straight red card in the opening game against Canada, which caused her to miss the rest of the Falcons’ games.
Despite this setback, Abiodun is making a comeback to the Falcons after missing the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers with Ethiopia.
