President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been directed to represent Nigeria at the global event.
This decision, revealed in a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, follows Tinubu’s recent return from diplomatic trips to China and the UK. The President plans to focus on pressing domestic issues, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating floods affecting parts of Nigeria.

Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national address at UNGA 79, participate in key sideline events, and hold bilateral meetings with other global leaders.
The General Debate, which runs from September 24 to 28, 2024, is themed “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
