Senator John Azuta-Mbata has been chosen as the 13th President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide following an election held at the old government lodge in Enugu on Friday.
Succession After Imo State’s Tenure
Azuta-Mbata succeeds Fidelis Chukwu, who had been serving out the remaining term of Imo State’s leadership following the deaths of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and George Obiozor in previous years. Chukwu’s tenure marked the end of Imo State’s cycle in leading the group, paving the way for Rivers State to take the helm for the next four years.

Azuta-Mbata’s Background and Political Career
Born in January 1960, Azuta-Mbata holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan. His political career includes serving as a Senator for Rivers East from 1999 to 2007, initially elected at the onset of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
A Significant Gathering of Igbo Leaders
The election was attended by a notable assembly of leaders, including five South-East governors, alongside various political stakeholders and thought leaders from the Igbo community, highlighting the importance of the event in the socio-political landscape of the Igbo nation.
