Protesters from Zamfara State occupied the entrance to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters, demanding the reopening of investigations into former Governor Bello Matawalle.
Organized by the APC Loyalists Forum, the protesters rallied at the EFCC headquarters on Friday, May 3, 2024.
Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, received the protest letter on behalf of the chairman, assuring the demonstrators of the EFCC’s commitment to concluding every corruption case.
Matawalle, who served as Zamfara State governor from May 29, 2019, to May 29, 2023, had been under investigation for alleged N70 billion frauds since May 2023.
The EFCC disclosed that the funds, meant for projects across local government areas, were allegedly diverted by the governor through proxies and contractors who received payment for unexecuted contracts.
Despite losing his re-election bid in the 2023 governorship election, Matawalle was appointed as the Minister of State for Defence by President Bola Tinubu.
