President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to resign as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as his tenure ends today, July 7, 2024.
The decision paves the way for another leader to assume the role, as the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government concludes at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu was unanimously endorsed as chairman in July 2023 during the 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. His term was marked by significant challenges, notably the occurrence of military coups in several member states, including Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea.

Tinubu took a firm stance against these unconstitutional changes, resulting in the imposition of sanctions which were later lifted in favor of diplomatic approaches.
Additionally, Tinubu played a vital role in facilitating dialogue among stakeholders during the 2024 Senegalese elections, contributing to their success.
The outcomes of the Extraordinary Summit will be crucial as ECOWAS navigates these complex issues and prepares for new leadership.
