A fresh wave of violence has struck the rural communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, as gunmen reportedly killed five people in an attack on Monday, October 14. This attack follows a series of violent incidents in the region that have claimed numerous lives over the past weeks.
The attack was confirmed by Farmasum Fuddang, Chairman of the Bokkos Cultural Development Council, and Duwam Bosco, the Secretary. In their statement, they recounted how the gunmen, allegedly identified as members of the Fulani tribe, ambushed four young men standing guard at their family compound in Rafut village, Kwatas district. The attackers then stormed the compound and killed an elderly man, bringing the total death toll to five.
The tragedy comes despite a security meeting held with police and military authorities on October 13, intended to prevent such attacks. Unfortunately, this incident adds to a string of violent assaults in the area, including deadly attacks on other villages in recent weeks.
The cultural council commended the efforts of security forces in repelling the attackers and rescuing an injured victim but expressed concern that the attack occurred despite prior warnings and intelligence about suspicious activities in the region. The group urged for more proactive collaboration between security agencies and local communities to prevent further violence.
The affected communities are calling for continued efforts to protect them from future assaults, as tensions remain high following a series of coordinated attacks that have left many dead and communities in fear.
