The Nigerian government is poised to announce a new minimum wage for workers following a crucial meeting of the Tripartite Committee in Abuja.
The committee, which includes governors, top government officials, and leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), convened at the Nicon Luxury Hotel behind closed doors.
This meeting marks the fifth session since organized labour suspended their industrial action. Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) governor, Hope Uzodimma, stated that no official decision has been made regarding the new minimum wage figure.
Rumors have suggested a possible figure of N105,000, but the governor assured that the final agreed amount would be disclosed after Friday’s meeting.

Participants in the committee include notable federal representatives such as the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Minister of Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; and representatives from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Head of Service of the Federation.
Previously, labour leaders have pushed for a N495 minimum wage, while the federal government’s offer of N60,000 was rejected.
One of the conditions for suspending the strike was the commitment of the committee to meet daily for a week to reach an agreement on the new minimum wage.
The outcome of this meeting is highly anticipated by workers across Nigeria, who are hoping for a substantial increase in the minimum wage to address the rising cost of living and economic challenges.
