AS Roma, the Italian Serie A club announced that they have parted ways with their manager, Jose Mourinho, on Tuesday.
The owners of the club stated that this decision was taken with the best interests of the team in mind.
The club is currently positioned in the ninth spot in the league and has struggled to cope with the absence of key players due to injuries, including striker Paulo Dybala.
They are currently 22 points behind the league leaders, Inter Milan.
The club issued a statement confirming the departure of Mourinho and his coaching staff with immediate effect.
They also indicated that further updates on the new first-team coaching staff would be made available soon.
In recent times, Roma has secured only four points in their last five league fixtures and was knocked out of the Coppa Italia last week in a 1-0 defeat to their rivals, Lazio.
Mourinho, following the defeat, had likened himself to the fictional character Harry Potter, stating that his position at the club was raising fans’ expectations for success.
The Portuguese coach had also hit back at critics, describing himself as the perfect example of professionalism despite his team experiencing poor results of late.
Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the club owners, expressed their gratitude to Jose Mourinho on behalf of the club for his passion and efforts since his arrival.
They mentioned that they would always have great memories of his tenure at Roma but believed that an immediate change was in the best interests of the club.
They also wished Mourinho and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.
Mourinho, who has previously coached several top European clubs such as Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United, was appointed as the coach of Roma in 2021. Under his management, Roma won the third-tier Europa Conference League in 2022 and reached the Europa League final in 2023, where they were defeated on penalties by Sevilla.
Roma is scheduled to host Verona, who are currently placed in the 18th spot in the league, on Saturday.
