The All-Progressives Congress (APC) has instructed the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminilayi Fubara without delay.
Mr. Tony Okocha, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, issued this directive during a press conference at his office in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
This decision follows Governor Fubara’s recent declaration that the Assembly members hold no legal standing, prompting Okocha to assert that failure to pursue impeachment would lead to disciplinary action against them as APC members.
Governor Fubara’s criticism of the Assembly’s conduct towards his administration on Monday triggered this response. He asserted that their legislative status hinges solely on his recognition, grounded in the Peace Accord initiated by President Bola Tinubu.
Addressing a delegation from Bayelsa State seeking to resolve the political crisis and improve relations between the states, Governor Fubara emphasized his tolerance despite possessing executive power. He emphasized his role as a mediator but warned that he could withdraw recognition from the Assembly members, effectively rendering them obsolete.
Fubara’s remarks underscored his commitment to peace while highlighting the delicate balance of power and his pivotal role in the political landscape of Rivers State.
