The Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has clarified the status of Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, a cross-dresser serving a six-month prison sentence for abusing the naira notes. Contrary to reports, Bobrisky does not occupy a VIP apartment in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
In a statement, the NCoS spokesperson, Rotimi Oladokun, stated that Bobrisky shares a cell with other convicted inmates, as there are no en-suite or ‘one-bedroom flat’ style cells in the facility. The cell block infrastructure is designed to accommodate multiple inmates.
The statement emphasized that Bobrisky is treated like every other inmate, with no special amenities or privileges. He is entitled to reformative and rehabilitative programs, including educational and vocational training, and is subject to the same rules and regulations, including the dress code.
Bobrisky was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 3, 2024, for spraying new naira notes at a movie premiere. He was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024, after pleading guilty to charges of naira abuse.
A source at the correctional centre confirmed that Bobrisky is treated equally to other inmates and was examined upon admission, revealing no gender realignment or genital organ alteration.
The NCoS has urged the public to disregard malicious publications and clarified that Bobrisky wears male-designated correctional clothing and is subject to regular monitoring and regulations.
