Despite the suspension of several senior officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over bribery allegations linked to controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, one of the implicated officers, Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC), claims he has not officially received any suspension notice.
Appearing before a House of Representatives panel on Monday, which is investigating bribery claims involving both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the NCoS, Mr. Anugwa, dressed in his official uniform, stated that he only learned of his suspension through social media.
Last Thursday, a statement issued by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board, signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, announced the suspension of Mr. Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, DCC of the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos State. The suspension was said to be part of an ongoing investigation into bribery allegations, with the assurance that the findings will be made public.

In addition to Anugwa and Adekunle, another officer, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was also suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate out of the facility. The board also suspended Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, a Deputy Controller of Corrections at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, over accusations of receiving bribes on behalf of an inmate.
The suspensions aim to ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations, with the public awaiting further updates.
