Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has criticized the state of social media in Nigeria, describing it as “taken over by barbarians.”
Speaking at an event, Soyinka expressed disappointment with the decline of intellectual discourse on social media platforms in Nigeria.
He noted that social media should foster reasoned engagement, but in Nigeria, the intellectual quotient has been replaced by a degradation of discourse.
Soyinka highlighted instances where a mere disagreement in an election could lead to individuals being labeled on social media.
He called on the nation’s intellectual community to rescue the country from the negative impact of social media.
