The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University’s Bauchi Branch has joined the national protest to call for the government’s action on their longstanding demands, some unresolved for over 15 years.
Initiating the protest from the union’s secretariat, the branch’s Vice Chairman, Dr. Muhammad Inti, led fellow members, who carried placards, through the university grounds to voice their demands.
The union has stated that this protest aims to prevent another strike, emphasizing their desire for the government to fulfill their renegotiated demands.
The demands included the finalization of the 2009 renegotiation agreement, which has been postponed for 15 years, the disbursement of earned academic allowances, the release of withheld salaries, and the payment of promotion arrears. Additionally, the union rejected the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
During the protest, Inti called on the federal government to ensure sufficient funding for public universities and to reverse the unlawful dissolution of the governing councils of public universities.
He expressed the union’s optimism that the protest would prompt the government to resolve their issues and avert another strike action.
