Following the enactment of the anti-homosexuality law, the World Bank has announced the suspension of new funds to Uganda.
Crux News recalls that the Ugandan government had earlier this year passed an anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) law. The law includes life imprisonment and death penalties.
World Bank in a statement published on its site and also shared on Twitter on Tuesday, noted that the law that criminalises same-sex relationships, contradicts its values as it seeks to protect gender and sexual minorities from exclusion in all the projects it funds.

“Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act contradicts the @WorldBank’s values. After reviewing our portfolio in the context of the new legislation, no new public financing to Uganda will be presented to our Board of Executive Directors.
“Our goal is to protect sexual and gender minorities from discrimination and exclusion in the projects we finance. These measures are currently under discussion with the authorities. We remain committed to helping all Ugandans without exception.”
