In an unexpected turn during the final round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Rwanda defeated Nigeria 2-1 on Monday in Uyo.
The Rwandans delivered a spirited performance, overturning a second-half lead by the Super Eagles to secure a historic victory, despite failing to qualify for the main tournament.
Samuel Chukwueze’s stunning solo effort gave Nigeria the lead in the 59th minute, but Rwanda responded with two rapid goals. Mutsinzi Ange equalized in the 72nd minute, and Nsuti Innocent secured the winner just three minutes later, stunning the Nigerian fans.
Despite the loss, Nigeria had already sealed their AFCON spot after Libya’s victory over Rwanda last week. Rwanda, finishing third in the group with eight points, missed out due to an inferior goal difference to Benin Republic, who claimed the group’s second qualification slot.
The Super Eagles fielded a largely experimental squad, with key players Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali absent. Interim coach Austine Eguavoen rested star striker Victor Osimhen but introduced him late in search of an equalizer, which proved futile.
This defeat serves as a wake-up call for Nigeria ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where they are set to meet Rwanda again.
