Former Nigerian football striker, Odion Ighalo, has emphasized the need to include more home-based players in the Super Eagles for future matches.
The inclusion of only three local players, Ojo Olorunleke, Amas Obasogie, and Christian Nwoke, in the provisional squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has left Ighalo disappointed.
According to him, the decision taken by the head coach, Jose Peseiro, to include only three home-based players in the squad is not right.
Ighalo expressed his views in an interview with Oma Sports, where he stated that it is essential to invite more home-grown talent to the squad.
He further added that at least seven to five players from the local league should be included in a 40-man list to encourage them, and not inviting them would mean that the team does not focus on the league.
In the past, only one home-based player, John Noble, was included in the Super Eagles squad for the last AFCON hosted by Cameroon.
It is expected that at least one of the three goalkeepers in the provisional list will be included in the final squad for AFCON 2023.
However, Ighalo believes that more local players should have been included in the current provisional squad and that the team should consider giving opportunities to more deserving players from the local league in the future.
