Rep. Obi Aguocha (LP-Abia) recently visited former President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his intervention for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia, outlined the purpose of his visit in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
Aguocha’s trip to Katsina aimed to gain Buhari’s support for initiating political dialogue and constructive engagement, to resolve the issues surrounding Kanu’s detention and trial, potentially leading to his release on grounds of national reconciliation.
Aguocha expressed regret for past actions and statements made by Kanu, acknowledging his missteps and seeking a political resolution to address the grievances from all sides. He emphasized that such a resolution would foster greater understanding and unity within the country.

The statement quoted Buhari as appreciating Aguocha’s humility and dedication, and as being open to a political solution for Kanu’s release.
Recently, Aguocha led a coalition of 50 House members from various political and ethnic backgrounds in signing a letter urging President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu. The letter asked Tinubu to instruct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fegbemi (SAN), to invoke section 174(1)(c) of the 1999 constitution to achieve this outcome.
Aguocha described the meeting with Buhari as part of broader efforts to secure a political resolution for Kanu’s detention and trial, aiming to foster dialogue and non-contentious solutions to national issues. He stressed that Kanu was willing to embrace this new dynamic and work collaboratively towards building a unified Nigeria.
Kanu has been held by the Department of the State Services since his extradition from Kenya in June 2021, facing charges of alleged treason and terrorism.
