Liverpool put on an impressive display of football as they maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over West Ham at Anfield.
The win saw Jurgen Klopp’s side move up to second in the table, just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
The game got off to a flying start with Mohamed Salah’s penalty putting Liverpool ahead early on.
The Egypt forward showed composure under pressure, drawing a foul from Nayef Aguerd before finishing emphatically from the spot.
However, West Ham was not to be outdone and equalised before the interval through Jarrod Bowen, who stooped to convert Vladimir Coufal’s cross.
Liverpool remained vulnerable throughout the game, with West Ham able to find space in behind their attack-minded midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Despite some slick play from the Hammers, it was Liverpool who regained the lead on the hour mark.
Darwin Nunez’s volley from a delightful pass over the top by Mac Allister found the far corner of the net, much to the delight of the Anfield faithful.
West Ham, though, were not ready to give up just yet.
Lucas Paqueta provided a real threat as the visitors kept pushing forward, but they were ultimately picked off late in the game as the returning Virgil van Dijk won the initial header from a corner and substitute Diogo Jota forced home from close range.
The victory was a deserved one for Liverpool, who had the edge throughout, though not entirely convincing.
West Ham had their fair share of opportunities throughout the game, with Alisson Becker making some crucial saves to keep the scoreline in Liverpool’s favour.
Liverpool’s fifth consecutive Premier League victory sees the Reds continue their strong start to the campaign.
They have now won their last five games in the competition, their longest winning streak since April-May 2023.
They have also scored in their last 16 games in the Premier League, their longest run of games with a goal in the competition since January-August 2022.
Salah, meanwhile, continues to impress with his contributions to goals in the Premier League.
He has now been involved in goals in his last 12 games in the competition, with six goals and nine assists to his name.
All in all, Liverpool looks to be a team to watch this season, with the potential to test Manchester City’s dominance in the Premier League.
