The Anambra State Police Command has successfully apprehended a suspect involved in a scheme of attempted kidnapping and extortion.
Details of the Arrest
Chukwuma Obi, a 32-year-old from Umuagu Village, Igboukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, was arrested by the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu on Tuesday. He is accused of trying to extort N1.2 million from a victim by threatening abduction, claiming affiliation with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Police Investigation and Confession
According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim had received a threatening message demanding payment to avoid kidnapping. During subsequent interrogations, Obi confessed to the crime and is now aiding authorities in identifying other gang members.
Recent Similar Incidents
This arrest comes on the heels of another case where a couple was caught for similar extortion tactics. They admitted to using threatening messages to scam victims and destroying SIM cards to cover their tracks.
