Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has sworn in three High Court Judges previously sidelined by the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
During a ceremony at the Festival Hall in Government House, the governor upheld his inaugural promise to address injustices, emphasizing that no one should face discrimination or marginalization due to personal biases or lack of political backing.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended eight candidates for appointment in June 2023. However, the previous administration only swore in five, excluding three, despite their clearance by the NJC. Governor Okpebholo rectified this by inducting the remaining trio into the Bench of Edo State High Court.
Addressing the judges, the governor reiterated the importance of their role under the separation of powers doctrine, urging them to uphold high judicial standards, ensure fair resolution of disputes, and protect citizens’ rights.
The newly sworn-in judges Ojo Maureen Osa, Okundamiya Godwin Jeff, and Edoghogho Eboigbe expressed gratitude to the governor. Speaking on behalf of the group, Justice Osa assured the public of their commitment to dispensing justice without fear or favor, lauding the governor for advancing justice in the state within just three weeks of assuming office.
This development marks a significant step in fortifying Edo State’s judiciary and promoting equity within its legal framework.
