A mild scene unfolded when a man, allegedly attempting to steal yam tubers from a farm in the Bar-Bari community of Abaji Area Council, FCT, became trapped on the scene.
A resident, Joshua Gwatana, recounted that the incident occurred on Tuesday around 5:45 pm when the suspect entered the farm and began harvesting yams. The farm owner discovered the suspect sitting beside the harvested tubers, unable to move.
Gwatana mentioned that the farm owner had previously raised concerns about frequent crop theft. Upon hearing about the incident, local youths gathered at the farm, stripped the suspect half-naked, and handed him over to vigilante members.
It was learned that, due to recurring thefts from his farm, the owner had placed charms around the farm, which might have been responsible for the suspect’s inability to flee with the stolen yams.
Daily Trust reports that there have been several cases of farm produce theft, particularly maize and yams, by suspected thieves in rural areas of the FCT.
Efforts to reach the spokeswoman of the FCT police command, Josephine Adeh, for comment on the incident were unsuccessful.
