The Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Management Agency (PS-DMCMA) has launched local pharmaceutical production to address the accessibility and affordability of essential medicines within the state. Announced by the agency’s Executive Secretary, Kim Bot, during an interview in Jos, five pharmaceutical products have already been manufactured as part of this initiative.
The products include:
– Cough syrup
– Antacid (Mist. Magnesium Trisilicate)
– Methylated spirit
– Antiseptic for external use
– Sanitisers for surface cleaning
Bot highlighted that the efficacy of these products has been thoroughly tested, yielding excellent results. This development marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to achieve self-reliance in healthcare.
In addition to local production, the agency’s pharmaceutical-grade warehouse ensures quality and safety through advanced temperature control and inventory management systems. The PS-DMCMA aims to scale up production after securing certification from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), with the majority of raw materials sourced locally.
Bot praised Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his commitment to healthcare development and ensuring access to quality healthcare services for Plateau residents.
This local manufacturing effort aligns with Nigeria’s broader goal to increase domestic drug production to 70%, as part of a national strategy to enhance drug security and reduce reliance on imports.
