In a significant show of solidarity, members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to a 50% reduction in their salaries for the next six months.
This decision aims to alleviate the economic hardship and hunger that many Nigerians are currently experiencing.
Speaker of the House, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, announced that each lawmaker’s monthly salary, approximately N600,000, would be halved.
This move comes after Deputy Speaker, Rep. Ahmed Idris Wase, proposed an amendment to a motion that urged young Nigerians to abandon plans for a nationwide protest and instead engage in dialogue with the government.
The salary cut initiative is expected to contribute N108 million monthly, totaling N648 million over the six-month period, to federal efforts aimed at addressing the soaring cost of food and other essentials.
Rep. Isiaka Ayokunle initially presented the motion, calling for dialogue over protests. Deputy Speaker Wase’s amendment suggested that lawmakers should make personal sacrifices to help mitigate the current economic challenges.

Speaker Gbajabiamila commended the House members for their commitment to this cause and urged the Executive branch to consider similar sacrifices to demonstrate a unified effort in tackling the nation’s economic issues.
The motion was adopted and has been referred to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for implementation.
This collective action by the House of Representatives marks a critical step in addressing the pressing needs of the Nigerian populace during these challenging times.
