Chadian Prime Minister, Succes Masra, announced his resignation on Wednesday, just over two weeks after his defeat to junta chief Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno in the presidential elections.
In a message authenticated by his team to AFP, Masra confirmed his resignation and that of the transition government, stating that it became irrelevant with the conclusion of the presidential election and was in accordance with the constitution.
Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 40, assumed the role of transitional president in April 2021 following the death of his father, President Idriss Deby Itno, who had ruled Chad for three decades. Deby Itno won the May 6 presidential vote with 61 percent of the ballot, as per final results.
Masra, also 40 years old, and formerly a staunch opponent of Deby before assuming the position of prime minister four months ago, secured 18.5 percent of the vote but contested the results.
He claimed victory in the ballot, which his party criticized as a “masquerade,” echoing concerns raised by international rights groups about its credibility and fairness.
