Justice ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized democracies have been discussing the legally acceptable use of artificial intelligence (AI) by judicial authorities.
The discussion on AI usage by judicial authorities took place on Friday during a two-day conference in Venice.
The conference’s theme, spanning Thursday and Friday, focused on setting boundaries for the use of machine learning and robotics. Italy is currently presiding over the G7.
Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, in a message on the X messaging service, highlighted the main subject as the “Fight against Transnational Organized Crime, emphasizing Drug Trafficking and the Laundering of Crime Proceeds.”
The G7, besides Italy, includes Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with European Union representatives also in attendance.
Following an Italian proposal, G7 leaders agreed on a joint resolution last month to combat the global illegal drug trade.
The declaration particularly targeted synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl.
The G7 plans to establish ongoing consultations among justice ministers.
In 2022 and 2023, G7 justice ministers convened in Berlin and Tokyo, respectively, to discuss war crimes committed in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian Justice Minister Denys Maliuska and Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin joined some discussions and conducted bilateral meetings with G7 members.
