The Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has sanctioned a significant salary increase of 25% to 35% for civil servants within various consolidated salary structures.
According to a statement from Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), these raises are effective from 1st January 2024.
Additionally, pension hikes of 20% to 28% for pensioners on the Defined Benefits Scheme corresponding to the six consolidated salary structures mentioned will commence from the same date.
The affected salary structures include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
It is noted that increments for the Tertiary Education and Health Sectors, involving the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) for universities, as well as the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS) for polytechnics and colleges of education, have already been implemented.
The Health Sector has also seen increases through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).
However, these increases are distinct from the new minimum wage, on which the organized labor and the government have not yet reached a consensus.
