Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, spoke at an economic forum held at Stanford University, where he stated that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could be achieved in as little as five years, depending on how the goal is defined.
Huang explained that if the definition of AGI is the ability to pass human tests, then it is expected to arrive soon.
He further added that if he gave an AI every possible test, it would pass all of them within the next five years.
However, Huang also pointed out that by other definitions, AGI may be much further away since scientists still disagree on how to describe how human minds work.
Huang’s company, Nvidia, is the world’s leading maker of artificial intelligence chips that are used to create systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

When asked about how many more chip factories are needed to support the expansion of the AI industry, Huang said that more fabs will be required, but each chip will also get better over time, which acts to limit the number of chips needed.
He explained that Nvidia is improving computing by a million times over ten years, and therefore the efficiency of computing is not static, and the demand cannot be predicted in absolute terms.
