Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has achieved a significant academic milestone by completing a doctorate in Islamic Law at the University of London, United Kingdom. In a touching video, the former monarch is seen becoming emotional after learning that his thesis was approved without any corrections—a rare and commendable achievement.
The thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” reflects Sanusi’s deep commitment to the study and application of Islamic legal principles.
Sanusi embarked on this PhD journey after his deposition by the then-governor of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje, in 2020. Following his dethronement, he relocated to the UK to focus on his studies, eventually earning this prestigious academic honor.

Sanusi’s academic journey has been marked by numerous achievements. In 2019, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in finance by the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. His academic credentials also include a second bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies and fiqh from Africa International University in Khartoum, Sudan, earned in 1997, and a degree in Economics obtained in 1981.
Sanusi is widely regarded as one of the most educated Nigerians to have ever ascended to the role of a monarch. His dedication to education and scholarship, even after his tenure as Emir, underscores his enduring influence and commitment to intellectual and social progress.
